The Ngami-Li Ball is a First Nation’s ball designed by Sean Kinchela, a proud Gamilaroi and Wiradjuri man of NSW.
The ball was the winning design in the 2021 ‘Design Your Own Steeden’ competition.
$1 from every ball sold goes to the KARI Foundation, a not-for-profit that helps build bright futures for Aboriginal families and young people.
Below is a breakdown of the meaning behind different aspects of the ball by Sean:
- Ngami-Li means to ‘To Watch’.
- The U shape symbols represent people and the middle symbol is a meeting place with people around it, the symbol depicts a camp.
- The circle symbols symbolise a meeting place the lines connecting them a journey.
- The hand symbolises unity.
- I have placed the hand in the middle of the meeting place to symbolise everyone meeting in the middle of their journey to unite.
- The cross hatching has always represented family ties to me and I use it to depict this in my stories and designs.
- Overall the ball represents how Rugby League unites people of all nations and clan groups of Australia.
